Cozy Heart Quilt Drive

Madee and Madison, fifth graders at Lake Bluff Elementary School in Shorewood, decided they wanted to make a positive impact in our community. They met over lunch one day and brainstormed about organizing a blanket drive for the homeless in Milwaukee. They decided it would benefit people who visit the Milwaukee food pantry, where there is actually a waiting list for blankets and where both of their moms volunteer.

The girls wrote a letter encouraging the students at their school to donate the gently used blankets in their homes. The response was overwhelming and in just two weeks the girls collected more than 150 blankets. Following in their mothers’ footsteps, they then wrapped them in ribbons and personally delivered them to the Milwaukee food pantry, spending two hours handing out blankets and food.

Both Madee and Madison said the experience left them feeling good that they could help people who aren’t as lucky as they are. They hope to conduct another drive next year.
